Vertebrae
This project encompasses a thorough exploration of movement in terms of its physical properties. This kite, a study of geese in flight, demonstrates that the painstakingly refined mechanics of nature cannot be beaten for function or form. Analysis on this concept generates form through the breaking down the most basic principles of flight – angles, planes and corresponding forces. It is only then possible to examine the simplified form as it moves, from A to B, its Journey to Destination, in 3D space. This reoccurring theme propagated throughout iteration and became integral to the forms themselves – how they behaved – each with a unique function. Further modelling focuses on the Spine – one of these simplified forms – analysed in terms of positive and negative shapes. This process showed through careful editing, simple forms, when fitted together, can create complex motion.
