This project explores cultural and climatic complexity. The design brief asks for short term accomodation modules for Nungalinya Indigenous Christian College, located in Darwin, NT. This site provides refuge for Indigenous Australians, coming from remote communities throughout the country.
The proposal attempts to find balance between design for safety and comfort while maintaining a clear philosophy for integration into the landscape and to promote adoption by residents and community. PLANT FIRST, BUILD SECOND learns and borrows climatic strategies from native flora to allow minimal built intervention to the site. The built modules are installed once the site is planted and developed, existing as a small part of a larger ecosystem - prioritising the land and nature that has, and will continue to, support life in Australia for centuries.
